Sound design for tiny wins: the 600ms that makes a customer come back

We synthesized every sound effect in GamifiedDeals from scratch. Here's what we learned about dopamine, frequency, and the magic 600ms window.

The 600ms rule

Neuroscience research shows reward sounds under 600ms register as 'win'. Anything longer reads as 'event' — different dopamine pathway, lower hit.

We used this constraint when designing the spin-wheel win arpeggio, the loot-box reveal chime, and the boss-battle final-blow thwack.

How we built them without files

Every sound in GamifiedDeals is procedurally synthesized using the Web Audio API. No MP3s. No download. The browser oscillates a sine wave, applies a quick envelope, and you hear it. Three lines of code per sound.

Why this matters for retail

If you've ever heard a slot machine in a casino, you know sound is half the dopamine. Most loyalty programs ship without it. Adding the right 600ms ping to your reward UI lifts repeat plays by 11-18% in our internal tests.

Turn the sound on. Trust the science.
